1. Charge Onyx

Your Onyx should come partially charged. We recommend fully charging Onyx before set up.

2. Install the Orion app

Click the link above to be taken to the Orion app in the Apple App store, or search for Orion Labs on the Apple App Store

3. Check that Bluetooth is enabled on your phone

Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open your Control Center. If the Bluetooth icon is highlighted, it is turned on. If not, tap the Bluetooth icon to turn it on.

4. Power on Onyx

Twist the face to the far right and hold until you feel Onyx vibrate and hear it play a tone, then release.

5. Pair Onyx with your phone

Once you’ve launched the Orion app and signed in, follow the on-screen instructions to pair your Onyx with your phone.

6. Set to “Active” mode

Twist the face to the left (lights aligned with clip) to be able to send and receive audio. The lights on Onyx will flash blue to indicate you are in Active mode.

8. Set to “Silent” mode

Twist the face to the right (lights centered between clip) to quickly silence Onyx. The lights will flash yellow to indicate you are in Silent mode. Onyx will not send or receive audio while in this state.

9. Adjust Onyx volume + or –

The volume buttons can be found on the side of Onyx. Press the top button (• •) to turn the volume up, and the bottom (•) button to toggle volume down.

10. Power off Onyx

Twist the face to the far right and hold until you feel Onyx vibrate and hear it play a tone, then release.

Swipe down from the top of your screen to open your Notification Shade. If the Bluetooth icon is highlighted, it is turned on. If not, tap the Bluetooth icon to turn it on.

5. Pair Onyx with your phone

Once you’ve launched the Orion app and signed in, follow the on-screen instructions to pair your Onyx with your phone.

6. Set to “Active” mode

Twist the face to the left (lights aligned with clip) to be able to send and receive audio. The lights on Onyx will flash blue to indicate you are in Active mode.

7. Practice using Onyx with Echo Chamber

Echo Chamber walks you through using Onyx and is a good way to test your audio. From the groups menu, tap “Echo Chamber” to join the group. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Twist the face to the right (lights centered between clip) to quickly silence Onyx. The lights will flash yellow to indicate you are in Silent mode. Onyx will not send or receive audio while in this state.

Using the App

Add a new contact via email

To add a new contact:

  1. Tap the top left corner of the screen to open the menu. Tap “Contacts” to view your contacts.
  2. Tap + in the top right corner of the screen, then “Add Contact” to navigate to add a new contact.
  3. Enter their email address, and then tap ✓ to save.

If your friend is found in our database, they will be added to your contacts. If not, you can invite them to join Orion: Tap the invite button, personalize your message if you wish, then tap ✓ to send the invitation to your friend.

Add a new contact from a group

If you’re currently in a group with someone you want to add as a contact:

  1. If you’re not already looking at the group screen, tap the icon on the top left corner of the screen to open the menu. Select “Current Group”.
  2. At the top of the screen is the group member list, showing avatars of people in the group. Tap the avatar of the person you want to add.
  3. Tap “Add” to add them to your list of Orion contacts. The + next to your contact’s name will change to ✓ to confirm they’ve been added.

Delete a contact

To delete a contact from your list:

  1. Tap the top left corner of the screen to open the menu. Tap “Contacts” to go to the contacts screen.
  2. Scroll down until you find the contact you want to delete.
  3. Swipe the contact to the left to reveal the delete button.
  4. Tap the delete button.

Add a new group

Groups are a way to have a conversation with other Onyx users. If you’d like to message your contacts, you’ll need to be in the same group as they are. To add a new group:

  1. Tap the icon on the top left corner of the screen to open the menu. Select “Current Group”.
  2. Tap the + on the top right corner of the screen. Select “Create a group”.
  3. Type in a name for the group.
  4. Tap the ✓ on the top right corner of the screen to create your group.
  5. On the group screen, tap the “Invite” button to select contacts to invite.

Switch groups

To switch the group you’re in:

  1. Tap the icon on the top left corner of the screen to open the menu. Tap “Current Group”.
  2. Tap the + on the top right corner of the screen. Select “Switch groups”.
  3. Tap the group you want to join.

Invite contacts to a group

To invite contacts to your current group:

  1. If you haven’t already, switch to the group you want to invite others to.
  2. Tap the + at the left of the group members list.
  3. Tap the Share Links to Join button.
  4. Select the medium through which to share: email, text, Slack, or any other messaging app you have installed.
  5. Select the person or people you want to invite. The link to the invitation will automatically appear in the body of the message. Add any custom messages you’d like, then hit send.

Share your group

Sharing a group is a quick, easy way to invite multiple people to a group. They’ll be able to join your group by tapping a link you send them on their mobile device. To share your group:

  1. If you haven’t already, switch to the group you want to share.
  2. Tap the button on the top right corner of the screen. Select “Share group”
  3. Select how you want to share (Facebook, email, etc.). You can customize the message if you’d like, then hit send/post.

Leave a group

To leave a group:

  1. From the “Current Group” screen, tap the + on the top right corner of the screen. Select “Switch groups”.
  2. Find the group you want to leave.
  3. Swipe left, then tap the red “Leave” button that appears.

Note: When you leave a group, it is removed from your group list and you cannot re-join it unless you are invited again by a group member.

Check notifications

When you’re invited to join a group, you’ll receive a notification, and a yellow badge will appear over the menu icon in the top left corner of the screen. To view your invitations:

  1. Tap the icon on the top left corner of the screen to open the menu, then “Notifications”.
  2. This screen shows any group invitations you’ve received and haven’t responded to yet. To refresh the screen, pull down the top of the screen with your finger.

Set avatar picture

  1. Tap the menu icon in the top left corner of the screen, and select your profile by tapping your name.
  2. At the top of the screen is a circle that contains either a picture you’ve previously selected or your initials. Tap the camera icon to change your avatar.
  3. Select a picture from your phone, or take a new picture for your avatar.
  4. Tap the ✓ at the top of the screen to save your new avatar.

Add a new contact via email

To add a new contact:

  1. Tap the top left corner of the screen to open the menu. Tap “Contacts” to view your contacts.
  2. Tap the three vertical dots on the top right corner of the screen (or the menu button of your phone if it has one), then “Add contact.”
  3. Enter their email address, and then tap the ✓ to save.

If your friend is found in our database, they will be added to your contacts.

Add a new contact from a group

If you’re currently in a group with someone you want to add as a contact:

  4. Tap ✓ on the top right corner of the screen to create your group.
  5. On the group screen, tap the “Invite” button to select contacts to invite.

  1. Tap the icon on the top left corner of the screen to open the menu. Select “Current Group.”
  2. Tap the three vertical boxes on the top right corner of the screen (or the menu button of your phone if it has one) and select “Switch groups”.
  3. Select the group you want to join.

  1. If you haven’t already, switch to the group you want to invite others to.

  3. On the drop-down menu, tap Share Group.

What the lights mean

The lights on its face can tell you a lot about what is going on with Onyx.

Power on

This animation of white lights will play briefly when powering Onyx on.

Unpaired

When Onyx is not connected to a phone, you will see a pattern of white, red and or blue lights. Launch the Orion app to connect Onyx.

Active

When you twist the face of Onyx so the lights are aligned with the edge of the clip loop, the lights on Onyx will briefly flash blue.

Silent

When you twist the face of Onyx so the lights point toward the middle of the clip loop, the lights on Onyx will briefly flash yellow.

Power off

This animation of white lights will play briefly when turning Onyx off.

Low Battery

A pulsing red light in the middle of Onyx indicates low battery. It’s time to charge Onyx.

Charging

When Onyx is plugged into a power source, the white lights pulse to reflect the charge level. The lights turn solid Onyx’s battery charges.

 

Please note if the pairing lights are on (a pattern of white, red and or blue lights), the charging lights will not show. Either connect Onyx to a phone or turn it off to see the charging lights.

Oops! Please reset.

If the third light is red and blinking, please reset Onyx by turning it off and on again.

Charging Onyx

Using the included cable, plug Onyx into a USB power source, such as a laptop or phone wall charger. Onyx fully charges in about an hour, and you can use Onyx while it’s charging. Note: any standard micro-USB cable may be used to charge Onyx.

Onyx was dead until I plugged it in, and now the pairing lights are on.

If the battery is completely drained. Onyx will automatically power on and display its pairing pattern when it’s plugged in. If you see the pairing pattern of blue, white, and/or red light while Onyx is plugged in, power if off or connect it to a phone to see the battery level. Here is an example of Onyx showing its pairing lights. Your Onyx will likely have its own distinct pattern. Note: Onyx ships partially charged, and may arrive to you with little to no battery charge.

Onyx played a tone and now there is a pulsing red light.

Onyx will play a tone when the battery level goes down to 20% and you will see a pulsing red light to remind you to charge Onyx. The connected phone will also display a low battery notification.

When the battery level reaches 10%, Onyx will repeat the tone and the phone will display another notification.

Pairing Onyx

Whenever Onyx is powered on and not connected to a phone, it shows a pairing pattern.

Match the pattern on your phone with the pattern on your Onyx.

Each Onyx displays a pattern of white, red and/or blue lights to let you know it’s ready to pair to any nearby phone. Your Onyx might show one, two, or all three colors.

Onyx connects to a phone via Bluetooth. The Orion app prompts you to turn on your phone’s Bluetooth if it is not already on.

How do I get the pairing lights to match?

Hold Onyx near your phone. The phone will display the pairing pattern of the nearest Onyx it finds. If the pattern on your phone screen matches the pattern displayed on Onyx, confirm the match and your Onyx is ready to use. If the patterns are different, you can adjust the pattern on your phone by tapping on each light. When you tap a circle it will change color: white → red → blue. Change the lights that don’t match until they all do, and then confirm the match.

Do I have to connect an Onyx each time I want to use it?

If you always use the same Onyx, you won’t have connect it each time. The Orion app automatically re-connects with the most recently connected Onyx, if it is in range of your phone.

I heard a sound and then Onyx showed a pairing pattern. What happened?

Onyx and the phone are no longer connected. When you disconnect Onyx from your phone, or if the Bluetooth connection with the phone is lost for any reason, Onyx will play a tone and display the pairing pattern.

Why don’t I see the pairing pattern on Onyx?

If Onyx is not displaying a pairing pattern, it is either powered off or it is powered on and connected to a phone. If you see lights when you twist the face back and forth between Active and Silent, Onyx is powered on and connected to a phone.

To connect it to a different phone, first disconnect Onyx in the Orion app settings of the phone it’s connected to. When it displays its pairing pattern, you’re ready to connect Onyx to another phone.

If you do not see lights when you twist the face, Onyx is off. Power on Onyx to connect it to a phone. If Onyx does not power on, it may need to be charged. Plug it in to see the battery level and charging progress.

Why is Onyx showing the pairing pattern and not the charging progress when I plug it in?

Onyx may automatically power on if plugged in when the battery is completely dead. If the phone it was most recently paired with is not in range, it will show the pairing pattern indicating it’s ready to connect to any nearby phone. To see the charging progress instead, power off Onyx or connect it to a phone.
